Read the opening

Dorothy lived in the middle of the great Kansas prairie. She lived with Uncle Henry, who was a farmer, and Aunt Em, who was the farmer's wife. Their house was very small. It had only one room, with an old stove, a table, three or four chairs and the beds.

There was no upstairs and no basement. But there was a small hole in the ground under the floor. The family called it the cyclone cellar. When a great wind came, they could go down into it and be safe.

When Dorothy stood in the doorway and looked around, she saw only the great gray prairie on every side. The sun had burned the grass gray. The rain and the sun had made the house gray too. Aunt Em was gray and thin, and she never smiled now. Uncle Henry never laughed. He worked hard from morning till night.

But Toto was not gray. Toto was a little black dog with long silky hair and small black eyes. He played all day long, and Dorothy played with him. She loved him very much.
