Read the opening

Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the river bank, with nothing to do. Once or twice she had looked into the book her sister was reading. But it had no pictures or conversations in it.

"And what is the use of a book," thought Alice, "without pictures or conversations?"

It was a hot day, and she felt sleepy and stupid. Suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.

There was nothing very strange about that. Alice did not even think it very odd to hear the Rabbit say to itself, "Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late!" But then the Rabbit took a watch out of its waistcoat pocket, looked at it, and hurried on.

Alice jumped to her feet. She had never before seen a rabbit with a pocket, or with a watch to take out of it. Burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it. She was just in time to see it go down a large rabbit hole under the hedge.
